The year 2018 marked a 19-year low in the number of persons under the supervision of adult correctional systems in the United States. The statistics presented in this report include data from various Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) data collections. Each collection relies on the voluntary participation of federal, state, and local respondents. This report presents in depth data related to the number of persons currently in correctional facilities and comares that number with previous data to showcase the decline in the prison population in the U.S.

Bureau of Justice Statistic collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government. These data are critical to federal, state, and local policymakers in combating crime and ensuring that justice is both efficient and evenhanded. The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is a component of the Office of Justice Programs in the U.S. Department of Justice.
