California's Future: Criminal Justice (2020)
PPIC -
This report highlights trends and offers recommendations for improving California's criminal justice system: California's prison costs have remained high despite a reduction in California's prison population; Prop 47 has lowered jail population; crime rates remain near historic lows; and racial and economic equity is still a concern. In order to amend these trends, PPIC recommends identifying and implementing measures to reduce recidivism, monitoring crime rates, and addressing equity issues. PPIC seeks to "inform and improve public policy through independent, objective, and nonpartisan research".
