California’s Prison Population (2019)

This report reveals trends in California's prison population using data from 2017. According to the report: prison population has been stabilized, African Americans remain overrepresented in prison, foreign-born Californians are less likely to be incarcerated, health care costs are on the rise due to an aging population, many prisoners serve decades, and the most common crimes that lead to incarceration are violent crimes. PPIC generated these trends using data from the California Department of Corrections and the United States Census Bureau. PPIC seeks to "inform and improve public policy through independent, objective, and nonpartisan research".
