ProPublicaAn article published under ProPublica that focused on flaws within assessment algorithms in the Criminal justice system. Risk assessment processes are used inform decisions about who can be set free at every stage of the criminal justice system, from assigning bond amounts- that have proven to be contributors to race discrimination as stated in a statistical test by the authors that where Black defendants were still 77 percent more likely to be pegged as at higher risk of committing a future violent crime and 45 percent more likely to be predicted to commit a future crime of any kind. The article analyzes the common breakdown of assessments and the 137 racialized questions used to criminalize Black and latino populations. Ultimately calling for reform around risk assessment to counter the rising criminalization of people of poorer backgrounds.
